Pouring water to ice

Standard bottled water

Tap water in plastic beer bottle

Slow freeze

I can't show you the best demo though. I drank the liquid water and it froze in my mouth.

Brief do-it-yourself instructions

  • Eat what's in your freezer or toss it, you'll need some space.
  • Put a case or two of bottled water in tonight before bed. Don't use glass. Feel free to reuse old bottles, even large 2-liter bottles. Just fill with tap (yes, I said tap) water.
  • Check it 6 or 7 or 8 hours later. Look for some bottles to be frozen hard as rock and, hopefully, many others to be frigid but completely liquid.
  • Gently remove a liquid candidate and add energy (smack it!) to test it. Repeat, gain experience, learn to open w/o freezing. Thaw them all and do it again. Enjoy.
  • Never, never believe anyone who offers an explanation. The truth is not intuitive, not even for a scientist.

Risk: I've never seen this but a bottle could burst in your freezer. Be brave!

Here's another fun one, self chipping ice.

Hard-freeze an unopened plastic bottle of plain carbonated (sparkling) water.

Cut the plastic bottle off of the ice, (you can whack it open with a suitable sharp edge). Warning, you get a pop when the plastic first rips open.

Break the ice into big chunks.

If this ice is allowed to warm slowly it will self-chip itself into pieces.

You can also put this ice into a pre-chilled drink and it will crack as it warms up. This will also carbonate your drink.
